Who Are the 14 UMNO Assemblymen Who Withdrew Support from Aminuddin?
On 27 April 2026, all 14 Barisan Nasional state assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan announced that they had unanimously lost confidence in the MB and are withdrawing support from the state government.
On 27 April 2026, all 14 Barisan Nasional state assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan announced, in a press conference at UMNO headquarters in Seremban, that they had unanimously lost confidence in Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun and were withdrawing support for the state government. Within hours, they had also announced they were claiming a simple majority to form a new government, with the backing of Perikatan Nasional’s five assemblymen.
The announcement was made by Negeri Sembilan UMNO liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias. Notably, one of the 14, Rantau assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, did not attend the press conference, as he was on official duty as Deputy UMNO President and Foreign Minister.
This article records, for the public, exactly who these 14 assemblymen are, which constituencies they represent, and what roles they held in the state government before withdrawing.
The Assembly Context
The 36-seat Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly was, until 27 April, governed by a PH-BN coalition formed after the August 2023 state election. Pakatan Harapan held 17 seats. Barisan Nasional held 14. Perikatan Nasional held five. PH and BN had contested as coalition partners under a pre-election unity pact.
A majority of 19 seats is required to form the state government.
With all 14 BN assemblymen withdrawing support, Aminuddin was left with 17. His government became a minority government. Tuanku Muhriz, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, subsequently advised Aminuddin to continue in office pending clarification of the majority question.
The 14 Assemblymen
1. Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias Constituency: Pertang (N02) Role: State UMNO chairman, Exco member, spokesperson at the 27 April press conference. He is also the Member of Parliament for Jelebu. Rumours circulated in Malaysian media that he is being considered as a potential Menteri Besar candidate, which he publicly denied.
2. Datuk Ismail Lasim Constituency: Senaling (N17) Role: Exco member. One of four UMNO Exco representatives who vacated their offices after the withdrawal.
3. Datuk Mustapha Nagoor Constituency: Palong (N06) Role: Exco member, overseeing the Youth and Sports Development portfolio. He received the PN cooperation letter at the 27 April Seremban press event, in his capacity as UMNO Negeri Sembilan secretary.
4. Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli Constituency: Linggi (N32) Role: Exco member, holding the Heritage, Technology, Innovation and Digital portfolio.
5. Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan Constituency: Rantau (N27) Role: UMNO Deputy President and Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs. He did not attend the 27 April press conference, as he was on official duty at the time. His inclusion in the bloc’s withdrawal statement was confirmed by reporting.
6. Datuk Mohd Asna Amin Constituency: Lenggeng (N09)
7. Datuk Zaifulbahri Idris Constituency: Chembong (N26)
8. Datuk Mohd Razi Mohd Ali Constituency: Sungai Lui (N03)
9. Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid Constituency: Juasseh (N15)
10. Muhammad Sufian Maradzi Constituency: Seri Menanti (N16)
11. Saiful Yazan Sulaiman Constituency: Johol (N19)
12. Suhaimi Aini Constituency: Kota (N28)
13. Mohd Najib Mohd Isa Constituency: Bagan Pinang (N31)
14. Abd Razak Ab Said Constituency: Gemas (N34)
What They Said
At the press conference, Jalaluddin framed the withdrawal as a response to the ongoing adat crisis and what he described as Aminuddin’s failure to manage it. “Yang Berhormat Menteri Besar should have played his role and used his wisdom as the state’s leading representative in this crisis,” he said.
He added that UMNO Exco representatives in the state government had not been consulted in discussions and had only become aware of the adat crisis after it had already escalated into a public controversy.
The bloc’s statement said: “All 14 Umno-BN Negeri Sembilan state assemblymen hereby unanimously declare our loss of confidence in the Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan and withdraw our support for the state government.”
An official notification was submitted to the Speaker and Secretary of the State Legislative Assembly the same day.
The Four Who Left Government
Four of the 14 had been serving as members of the Negeri Sembilan State Executive Council (Exco) under Aminuddin’s administration. They vacated their offices following the withdrawal of support.
On 28 April, Jalaluddin ordered all four to clear their desks and return government assets including official vehicles.
The four are:
Jalaluddin Alias (Pertang) held two portfolios: Rural Development, Plantations and Commodities, and Agriculture, Food Security and Cost of Living.
Ismail Lasim (Senaling) held the Education and Human Capital portfolio.
Mustapha Nagoor (Palong) held the Youth and Sports Development portfolio.
Mohd Faizal Ramli (Linggi) held the Heritage, Technology, Innovation and Digital portfolio.
What Happens Next: Replacing the Four
The Menteri Besar recommends Exco appointments to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, who formally approves them. The power to fill these four seats therefore sits with Aminuddin, subject to Tuanku Muhriz’s consent.
Aminuddin has not announced replacements. When a viral poster circulated claiming he had quietly filled the seats with PKR and DAP assemblymen, he denied it and called it fake news designed to inflame racial sentiment.
The Response
The withdrawal was rejected as a backdoor manoeuvre by multiple parties.
Pakatan Harapan communications director Fahmi Fadzil said the reasons given by the 14 assemblymen were not related to Aminuddin’s performance as Menteri Besar, and that the action was taken without regard for the welfare of the people. He described it as an act that did not reflect the spirit of the unity government.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, the Chennah assemblyman, reminded BN that its 14 assemblymen had been elected on the basis of a unity pact with PH, saying that withdrawing support was a failure to respect the mandate given by the people of Negeri Sembilan.
UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh, himself a party member, publicly stated that he opposed forming a government through crossover manoeuvres regardless of which party benefits. He said UMNO had two legitimate choices: join the opposition, or push for the dissolution of the state assembly and a fresh election. He drew a parallel with the Perlis political crisis, where similar crossovers had drawn anger from UMNO’s own supporters.
UMNO President and BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, while acknowledging that he had been informed of the assemblymen’s plans, said the decision was a state chapter decision made unilaterally and that he would meet the 14 assemblymen for an explanation. He said the matter would be brought before the UMNO political bureau and Supreme Council.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, following an audience with Tuanku Muhriz, stated that he supported the Yang di-Pertuan Besar’s position that Aminuddin should continue as Menteri Besar.
This is an ongoing situation. We will continue to track developments as they happen.
