14 January 2026 Tuanku Muhriz delivered a public speech expressing shock and disappointment at parties who continued to support individuals convicted of serious corruption charges, in a royal address at the investiture of state awards marking his 78th birthday at Istana Besar Seri Menanti (The Vibes, 14 January 2026).

5 March 2026 A sitting of the DKU was held at Istana Besar Seri Menanti, chaired by Tuanku Muhriz. In his supporting affidavit filed on 17 July, Muhammad Abdullah, the Undang of Johol, stated that he attended together with Mubarak and Maarof Mat Rashad, the Tunku Besar Tampin and the Dato’ Syahbandar of Sungei Ujong, with the Menteri Besar, the State Secretary, the State Legal Adviser and the Mufti also present. He stated that the sitting became tense after Mubarak raised alleged administrative and customary misconduct by Tuanku Muhriz, that he, Mubarak and Maarof then left and reconvened at Balai Undang Sungei Ujong, and that at that second gathering they decided Tuanku Muhriz was no longer qualified to hold office. He stated that Mubarak then called on the Menteri Besar to act under Article 10(2), that the Menteri Besar said he would discuss the matter, and that no Proclamation followed. 17 April 2026, 10:00am The Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) convened a special sitting at Istana Besar Seri Menanti. Tuanku Muhriz personally presided, invoking Article 24 of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution 1959. Ibu Soko Klana Hulu and Waris Klana Hulu were formally invited to attend. All 33 grounds for Mubarak’s removal were presented to the full DKU. The DKU unanimously advised acceptance of Mubarak’s removal, his removal having occurred under the custom of the Luak. Under Article 16(3) of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution 1959, DKU advice on such questions is final and cannot be challenged in any court (Berita Harian, 23 April 2026).

17 April 2026, evening Menteri Besar Aminuddin issued an official media statement confirming Mubarak’s removal (Malay Mail, 20 April 2026).

18 April 2026 Mubarak’s supporters, the Dato’-Dato’ Lembaga Adat Sungei Ujong, issued a statement claiming that he remained the legitimate Undang.

19 April 2026, approximately 6:15pm Mubarak, together with the Undang of Jelebu, Johol and Rembau, staged a public declaration at the Balai Undang Luak Sungei Ujong, livestreamed on the official Luak Sungei Ujong Facebook page. Two declarations were read: first, that Tuanku Muhriz was removed as Yang di-Pertuan Besar; second, that Tunku Nadzaruddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar was installed as the new ruler. No specific misconduct against Tuanku Muhriz was named. The declaration was witnessed by Datuk Syahbandar Sungei Ujong Datuk Baharudin Abdul Khalid (The Star, 21 April 2026).

19 April 2026 Telaga Undang Sarifah Norzaidah Al-Qadri issued a statement confirming that she never gave Mubarak a mandate to make the declaration, and siding firmly with Tuanku Muhriz (Free Malaysia Today, 20 April 2026).

20 April 2026, early hours Menteri Besar Aminuddin issued a firm statement rejecting the declaration. He stated that it could not be accepted or recognised, as Mubarak no longer held any authority as Undang, and that the action contravened Articles 10 to 12 of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution 1959 (Malay Mail, 20 April 2026, Free Malaysia Today, 20 April 2026).

20 April 2026 The police issued a public warning against spreading content touching on the 3R sensitivities of Race, Religion and Royalty in connection with the crisis (Malay Mail, 21 April 2026).

21 April 2026 The Undang’s camp issued a counter-argument claiming that Mubarak’s removal was invalid because two of the Dato’-Dato’ Lembaga who had participated in the DKU sitting had themselves been previously dismissed. Legal experts rejected this argument, and Article 16 of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution makes DKU decisions final and unchallengeable in any court. Former Court of Appeal judge Datuk Seri Mohd Hishamudin Yunus noted that even if the DKU process had been flawed, that would not retroactively legitimise the declaration against Tuanku Muhriz (Malaysiakini, 27 April 2026).

21 April 2026 The Undang’s camp went further, asserting not only that Mubarak’s removal was invalid and that the Dato’-Dato’ Lembaga who had participated should themselves be removed, but that Menteri Besar Aminuddin should also be dismissed for his role in the DKU sitting and his subsequent rejection of the declaration (Malaysiakini, 27 April 2026).

22 April 2026 The State Secretary’s office confirmed that the DUN opening would proceed as scheduled, and multiple constitutional lawyers began publishing opinions rejecting the validity of the declaration (The Star, 22 April 2026).

23 April 2026, morning Former Court of Appeal judge Datuk Seri Mohd Hishamudin Yunus published an opinion in The Edge identifying three grounds of invalidity, and Malik Imtiaz Sarwar published in Free Malaysia Today, concluding that there was no constitutional crisis (Free Malaysia Today, 23 April 2026).

23 April 2026, 10:00am Tuanku Muhriz opened the first sitting of the fourth session of the 15th Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly at Wisma Negeri. All four Undang and the Tunku Besar Tampin boycotted the sitting, the first such absence in 17 years. Tuanku Muhriz delivered his royal address, stating that the absence of the dignitaries did not affect the validity of the proceedings (Malay Mail, 23 April 2026).

24 April 2026 The Prime Minister stated that the Federal Government would not intervene directly and that the crisis should be resolved according to state law and custom, while the Conference of Rulers had not publicly intervened (The Vibes, 24 April 2026).

27 April 2026 Jalaluddin Alias announced that all 14 UMNO-BN ADUN (Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri) had unanimously withdrawn confidence in Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun, citing the royal crisis as the trigger, and stated that UMNO had not been informed or consulted about the crisis until it became public (The Vibes, 27 April 2026).

27 April 2026 Tuanku Muhriz directed the state administration to continue as usual following an emergency audience with Aminuddin, who confirmed that he would remain in office as a minority government. DAP’s Anthony Loke rejected any attempt to form a backdoor government, and all 11 DAP assemblymen confirmed their continued support for Aminuddin (The Rakyat Post, 27 April 2026).

27 April 2026, evening Ahmad Zahid distanced the UMNO central leadership from the state chapter’s withdrawal, saying the final decision rested with him. He announced an emergency UMNO Supreme Council meeting and a joint meeting with Anwar Ibrahim and the 14 assemblymen, and Jalaluddin Alias was reported as the proposed successor Menteri Besar (Free Malaysia Today, 27 April 2026).

27 April 2026 Constitutional expert Aziz Bari raised the possibility of federal emergency powers under Article 150 to meet the state assembly’s six-month reconvening deadline, and former Menteri Besar Rais Yatim urged Aminuddin to reconvene the DKU to ease tensions (Free Malaysia Today, 27 April 2026).

27 April 2026 All 14 Barisan Nasional assemblymen announced they had lost confidence in and withdrawn support for Aminuddin. UMNO’s Negeri Sembilan chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias linked the move directly to Aminuddin’s handling of the royal crisis. Perikatan Nasional (PN), holding five seats, offered to cooperate with BN (all UMNO), and a combined BN-PN bloc would hold 19 of 36 seats. Pakatan Harapan (PH) Communications Director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil described the move as a betrayal and a backdoor attempt to take over the state administration (The Vibes, 27 April 2026).

28 April 2026 UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi chaired an emergency UMNO Supreme Council meeting, at which the state chapter and the central leadership were no longer aligned (Free Malaysia Today, 28 April 2026).

28 April 2026 Anwar issued an official statement confirming a palace audience with Tuanku Muhriz and publicly backed the decree for Aminuddin to continue. Zahid stated that UMNO would not interfere in adat matters, and BN rejected the ‘backdoor government’ characterisation, describing its withdrawal as openly and formally made and based on principles (Free Malaysia Today, 28 April 2026, Free Malaysia Today, 28 April 2026).

29 April 2026 Anwar ruled out a near-term dissolution of the state assembly and directed all assemblymen, including PN’s five, to abide by the royal decree. No formal vote of no confidence had been tabled, and the standoff across the adat, constitutional and political dimensions remained unresolved (The Star, 29 April 2026).

29 April 2026 UMNO’s Political Bureau issued a statement acknowledging the assemblymen’s loss of confidence while stopping short of endorsing a new government, and called for urgent talks with Pakatan Harapan under the Unity Government MOU. The same day, the Negeri Sembilan State Secretary’s Office served Mubarak with a letter directing him to vacate the official residence and Balai Undang Luak Sungei Ujong with immediate effect (The Star, 30 April 2026, Free Malaysia Today, 30 April 2026).

30 April 2026 UMNO reversed its position. Ahmad Zahid met the 14 assemblymen in Putrajaya and announced that all 14 assemblymen from UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) in Negeri Sembilan had agreed to remain within the framework of the unity government. He told the Cabinet that he opposed any backdoor government formation, and Transport Minister Anthony Loke described the situation as stable (The Star, 30 April 2026).

1 May 2026 The UMNO state wings escalated further. The Negeri Sembilan UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings issued a joint statement condemning the eviction order as ‘inappropriate, insensitive, and an abuse of administrative powers’, said it confirmed that Aminuddin had failed to manage the crisis, and stood by the 14 assemblymen’s withdrawal of support (Free Malaysia Today, 1 May 2026).

1 May 2026 The same day, the UMNO president made clear that the wings’ statement represented their personal opinion only, and that the decision of the 14 BN assemblymen to remain in the unity government was a party decision that must be respected (The Star, 1 May 2026).

3 May 2026 Twelve UMNO representatives told Zahid that they wished to remain in the unity government (Malaysiakini, 3 May 2026).

5 May 2026 The Majlis Dato Lembaga Adat Sungei Ujong announced a new Undang, Muhammad Faris bin Johari (New Straits Times, 5 May 2026).

5 May 2026 Mubarak and five others filed an originating summons at the Seremban High Court, seeking an order compelling the state government and the DKU to release the minutes of the 17 April sitting, and an order barring enforcement of any decision taken at that sitting until the minutes were produced (Malaysiakini, 5 May 2026).

5 May 2026 A separate statement, said to speak for the Sungei Ujong Adat leadership, declared the installation of Muhammad Faris invalid on the ground that those who carried it out had themselves been dismissed (Utusan Malaysia, 5 May 2026).

8 May 2026 The Ibu Soko Tua of Luak Rembau challenged the legitimacy of the selection of the Undang of Rembau, citing Adat defects (Negeri Kita, 8 May 2026).

10 May 2026 Abd Rahman Limat, 70, was declared the 11th Undang Luak Sungei Ujong at Telapak Tua Kampung Chedang, with sanction from a different perut to the one that had installed Muhammad Faris Johari on 22 April (Sinar Harian, 10 May 2026).

13 May 2026 The six plaintiffs sought an interim stay (a pause) of the DKU's 17 April acknowledgement of Mubarak's removal as Undang of Sungei Ujong, and the court declined for want of supporting evidence, with liberty to refile. Counsel for the DKU and its Secretary raised a preliminary objection under Article 16(3) that the court had no jurisdiction to hear the suit, and Justice Roz Mawar Rozain directed them to file a supporting affidavit within seven days, with the hearing on that objection fixed for 28 July 2026. The state government took a separate procedural objection, arguing that only DKU members are entitled to copies of DKU minutes (Free Malaysia Today, 13 May 2026).

19 May 2026 A fourth claimant to the Undang Luak Sungei Ujong position emerged. Othman Ismail told Malaysiakini that he had been installed in 2009 with a watikah pemasyhuran, but that the DKU at the time affirmed Mubarak as the rightful holder of the pesaka Datuk Klana Petra Ke-10, and that the state government had refused to recognise his installation (Malaysiakini, 17 May 2026, Malaysiakini, 19 May 2026).

21 May 2026 Six signatories among the ruling chiefs, named in later court filings as Mubarak, the Undang of Jelebu Maarof Mat Rashad, the Undang of Johol Muhammad Abdullah, the Undang of Rembau Abdul Rahim Yasin, the Tunku Besar of Tampin Tunku Syed Razman Tunku Syed Idrus Al-Qadri, and the Syahbandar of Sungei Ujong Baharudin Abdul Khalid, issued a directive calling for a special sitting of the DKU. Article 24 provides that a sitting of the DKU is convened and presided over by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, and the standing of a sitting summoned by the chiefs was contested (The Star, 29 May 2026).

29 May 2026 Six of the eight members of the DKU had moved to suspend its secretary, Raja Norazli Raja Nordin, citing his asserted failure to comply with an order to convene a special sitting. Raja Norazli maintained that the authority to remove the secretary rested with the Yang di-Pertuan Besar (The Star, 29 May 2026).

3 June 2026 The State Secretary’s office stated that the DKU secretary is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, addressing the question of who holds the authority to remove the office-holder (The Star, 3 June 2026).

4 June 2026 Following an audience with Tuanku Muhriz at Istana Hinggap that evening, Menteri Besar Aminuddin announced that the State Legislative Assembly would be dissolved with effect from 5 June, with the consent of His Highness, returning the mandate to voters. He said Pakatan Harapan would contest all 36 seats, and that notice would be sent to the Election Commission to set nomination and polling dates, with the election to be held within 60 days (Free Malaysia Today, 4 June 2026, The Star, 4 June 2026).

5 June 2026, morning The High Court at Seremban, before Justice Roz Mawar Rozain, granted the ad interim injunctions sought by Raja Norazli and the DKU. The orders restrained the six plaintiffs from convening any DKU meeting, including the special sitting announced for that day, from suspending or removing Raja Norazli as Secretary, from establishing any committee to assume his functions, and from altering the status quo of the DKU as it stood before 21 May. The injunctions were to hold pending the court's determination of the jurisdiction and justiciability questions (Malay Mail, 5 June 2026).

5 June 2026 Police briefly locked the gate of the official residence of the Tunku Besar of Tampin, where the special sitting was to be held, and several adat leaders and invited guests, among them three Undangs, the Syahbandar, and former Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Rais Yatim, were initially barred from entering. The gates were opened after a short standoff (Malay Mail, 5 June 2026).

5 June 2026 Rais Yatim announced that Tunku Nadzaruddin had been proclaimed the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar at a hotel in Alor Gajah, Melaka, hours after the Tampin standoff. The proclamation took place after the interim injunction had been granted, and its legitimacy is disputed (Malay Mail, 5 June 2026).

5 June 2026 Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed that Putrajaya continued to recognise Tuanku Muhriz as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, and described the election as the means to resolve the uncertainty surrounding the state’s royal institution (Malay Mail, 5 June 2026).

6 June 2026 Raja Norazli said he would initiate committal proceedings for contempt of court against six individuals, including three ruling chiefs, on the ground that they had defied the interim injunction by proceeding with the proclamation of a Yang di-Pertuan Besar (Malay Mail, 6 June 2026).

9 June 2026 Istana Besar Seri Menanti announced that the proclamation of Tunku Nadzaruddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar carried no legal effect. The Comptroller of the Royal Household, Datuk Azizi Mohamad Ali, said that by his own action in accepting that proclamation, Tunku Nadzaruddin had relinquished the hereditary title of Tunku Panglima Besar, which then fell vacant (Malay Mail, 9 June 2026).

11 June 2026 Tuanku Muhriz proclaimed his second son, Tunku Zain Al-’Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz, as the new Tunku Panglima Besar (Free Malaysia Today, 11 June 2026).

12 June 2026 The six plaintiffs filed an application at the Seremban High Court to set aside the ad interim injunction restraining the DKU from convening. The application was listed for case management before Justice Roz Mawar Rozain on 18 June and fixed for hearing on 7 July 2026, with the DKU and its Secretary Raja Norazli Raja Nordin represented by the firm of Steven Thiru (The Edge, 15 June 2026).

19 June 2026 Mosques across the Luak of Sungei Ujong, Jelebu, Johol and Rembau, and the Tampin territory, were directed to pray for Tunku Nadzaruddin in the Friday sermon, following a letter dated 9 June from the chieftains and the Tunku Besar Tampin to the Negeri Sembilan Mufti, Faudzinaim Badaruddin, invoking Article 181(1) of the Federal Constitution. The Mufti confirmed receiving the letter and said the matter lay outside his department’s jurisdiction and sat with the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Affairs Department. The Comptroller of the Royal Household, Azizi Ali, separately stated that the 5 June proclamation was invalid and unrecognised under the constitution, law and custom of Negeri Sembilan (Malaysiakini, 19 June 2026).

19 June 2026 At the Masjid Dato’ Undang Luak Jelebu, a yellow carpet was laid for Tunku Nadzaruddin’s arrival and the prayer was read, with Malaysiakini’s Malay-language report placing the styled title in inverted commas, as ‘Yamtuan Besar’, and noting that his proclamation as successor to Tuanku Muhriz remained disputed (Malaysiakini, 19 June 2026).

23 to 25 June 2026 The Conference of Rulers meeting scheduled for these dates was postponed (The Star, 23 June 2026, The Straits Times, 23 June 2026).

25 June 2026 The Buapak and Ibu Soko of Luak Rembau selected Hassan Ab Hamid, the Buapak Kampung Tanjong, as the 22nd Undang Luak Rembau, with Kampung Tanjong confirmed as the Kampung Benih. A rival camp aligned with Abdul Rahim Yasin rejected the selection, with 17 Adat leaders and Datuk Perba Abdul Razak Mohd Yassin maintaining that his 2024 proclamation stood (Sinar Harian, 25 June 2026).

25 June 2026 At Istana Besar Seri Menanti, the Tunku Besar Seri Menanti, Tunku Ali Redhauddin, received the Dato’-Dato’ Adat of Luak Rembau, who came to present Hassan and to seek consent for the date of the ceremony (Sinar Harian, 25 June 2026).

27 June 2026 Tuanku Muhriz conducted the istiadat installing Muhammad Faris Johari as the 11th Undang of Luak Sungei Ujong and formalising the appointment of Hassan Ab Hamid as the 22nd Undang of Luak Rembau, and used the occasion to call for loyalty (The Star, 27 June 2026, Free Malaysia Today, 27 June 2026).

29 June 2026 The Rembau District and Land Office ordered Abdul Rahim Yasin to vacate the official residence and Balai Undang Luak Rembau, two days after Hassan’s installation (New Straits Times, 30 June 2026, The Star, 30 June 2026).

8 July 2026 The Seremban High Court granted the DKU and its Secretary leave to begin contempt proceedings against the six plaintiffs for allegedly breaching the 5 June ad interim injunction, refused a stay, and fixed the committal hearing for 28 July 2026. Under that order, the plaintiffs were barred from convening or attending any DKU meeting, from interfering with the Secretary of the DKU in carrying out his functions under the Laws of the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan 1959, from setting up any committee or person to assume his powers or to act and issue statements for the DKU, and from taking any decision or action that disturbed the status quo as it stood before 21 May 2026 (Sinar Harian, 8 July 2026, The Edge, 8 July 2026). The matter remains sub judice.

15 July 2026 DKU secretary Raja Norazli Raja Nordin issued letters revoking the hereditary titles of three Rembau nobles, Abdul Razak Yassin, Zaharuddin Idris and Azmi Ahmad, citing a decree of Hassan Ab Hamid as 22nd Undang. The revocations were backdated to August 2024, when Abdul Rahim Yasin was the recognised Undang (Malaysiakini, 17 July 2026).

17 July 2026 Abdul Razak Yassin, Dato’ Perba, said that the three did not recognise the decision, arguing that Hassan had not been appointed by the Council of Dato’ Lembaga and that the injunction preserved the chieftains’ positions (Malaysiakini, 17 July 2026).

17 July 2026 Mubarak and the three Undangs filed a judicial review application at the High Court of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, case number WA-25-201-07/2026, naming the Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan and the state government as respondents. They sought an order of mandamus compelling the Menteri Besar to sign a Proclamation under Article 10(2), and a declaration that the document exhibited as DMA-1 is valid under Articles 10(1)(b) and 10(2). The application was brought under Article 71(2) of the Federal Constitution and section 44 of the Specific Relief Act 1950, and refers to a letter sent by the plaintiffs to the Menteri Besar on 20 April. The supporting affidavit was affirmed the same day at Seremban by Muhammad Abdullah, the Undang of Johol (The Edge, 7 August 2026).

18 July 2026 Nomination day: 103 candidates stood for 36 seats, with polling set for 1 August (The Star, 18 July 2026).

24 July 2026 The six plaintiffs applied to the Seremban High Court for the recusal of Justice Roz Mawar Rozain from the originating summons and from the 28 July committal proceedings, alleging a "real danger of bias" and seeking a stay of the summons. According to the filing, the judge had attended a Maal Hijrah (Islamic New Year) event on 16 June at which she was seated beside the Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan and at the same table as the wife of the Menteri Besar, the wife of the State Secretary and two state executive councillors, all of whom the plaintiffs said had close links to the subject matter of the summons. The plaintiffs had separately filed a notice of appeal on 21 July against the 8 July decision granting leave for contempt (The Edge, 27 July 2026). The matter remains sub judice.

28 July 2026 On the date fixed for the committal hearing, the Seremban High Court adjourned the contempt proceedings after the plaintiffs filed an application for an interim stay, to be heard at the Court of Appeal the next day. The jurisdiction hearing on the originating summons did not proceed, and the summons remains filed and unheard on its merits. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain fixed 28 September 2026 for case management of all existing matters before her, noting the file already ran to more than two hundred enclosures. The DKU and its Secretary filed a fresh contempt application, their counsel citing the six plaintiffs' avoidance of service in the first (The Edge, 28 July 2026, Free Malaysia Today, 28 July 2026).

29 July 2026 The Court of Appeal granted the plaintiffs an interim stay of the contempt proceedings, which remains in force. The appeal against the 8 July decision to grant leave for contempt is fixed for case management at the Court of Appeal on 19 October 2026 (Free Malaysia Today, 29 July 2026).

30 July 2026 Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz revoked the two royal titles held by Rais Yatim, two days ahead of the Negeri Sembilan state election, with the state secretary citing preservation of the throne’s ‘majesty, sanctity and dignity’. Sources close to the palace told The Straits Times that the move came in response to a series of Rais’s actions against the throne stretching back several years, including his involvement, dating to 2022, in encouraging the Undang of Jelebu to refer to himself as ‘Sultan’, and his proclamation of Muhriz’s cousin Nadzaruddin Ja’afar as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar on 5 June 2026. The report also stated that Rais had been serving as legal adviser to the Undang (The Straits Times, 30 July 2026).

31 July 2026 The Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) met at Istana Besar Seri Menanti, chaired by Tuanku Muhriz, on the eve of polling (Free Malaysia Today, 1 August 2026).

1 August 2026 Polling day in the 16th state election. The DKU set out its decisions in a statement dated 1 August: it acknowledged the Luak of Jelebu’s removal of Maarof Mat Rashad as Undang, with effect from 31 May 2023, and declared the office vacant; it affirmed the 27 June appointments of Muhammad Faris Johari (Sungei Ujong) and Hassan Ab Hamid (Rembau); it maintained that Mubarak Dohak, the removed Undang of Luak Sungei Ujong, had ceased to hold office on 17 April 2026; and it stated that Abdul Rahim Yasin’s appointment as Undang of Luak Rembau was never completed (Free Malaysia Today, 1 August 2026).

1 August 2026 Results declared through the evening gave BN 18 seats, PN 7 and PH 11, with the BN-PN alliance taking 25 of 36 (Bernama, 2 August 2026). Late that night, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi presented Tuanku Muhriz with an official letter at Istana Hinggap containing three names for Menteri Besar (Free Malaysia Today, 1 August 2026).

2 August 2026 At 11:29am, Ismail Lasim took the oath of office as Menteri Besar before Tuanku Muhriz at the Balairung Seri of Istana Besar Seri Menanti (New Straits Times, 2 August 2026, Malaysiakini, 1 August 2026).

7 August 2026 Ten State Assemblymen (ADUNs) took the oath of office as members of the State Executive Council before Tuanku Muhriz at Istana Besar Seri Menanti, completing the BN-PN administration with eight exco members from BN and two from PN (Free Malaysia Today, 7 August 2026).

10 August 2026 The judicial review, WA-25-201-07/2026, came before the Kuala Lumpur High Court. No leave hearing took place. The DKU and its Secretary Raja Norazli Raja Nordin, together with Faris Johari and Hassan Ab Hamid, applied to intervene, and the DKU and Secretary also sought a stay of the leave application pending that bid. The court declined an oral application by the applicants' counsel for a gag order and directed counsel to decide whether the case should continue in Kuala Lumpur or transfer to Seremban, to avoid conflicting rulings. Parties are due to return on 7 October 2026 (Free Malaysia Today, 10 August 2026, The Edge, 10 August 2026).

18 August 2026 At the Seremban High Court, Justice Roz Mawar Rozain heard submissions in the originating summonses filed by the Negeri Sembilan state government seeking eviction orders for the Balai Undang (the official hall of an Undang) and residences of the Undang of Rembau and the Undang of Sungei Ujong, and fixed 24 August 2026 for her decision, to be delivered at 4pm over Zoom (The Star, 18 August 2026).

24 August 2026 The Seremban High Court dismissed both of the state government’s applications to evict the occupants of the Balai Undang (the Undang’s official hall) and official residences of Rembau and Sungei Ujong. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain held that “Kerajaan Negeri Sembilan” lacked locus standi (legal standing), since Section 16 of the National Land Code requires such proceedings to be brought by the State Director of Lands and Mines. She recorded that the ruling gives neither occupant any right to remain and does not decide who holds either chieftainship. The applications were dismissed without prejudice, with RM25,000 in costs on each suit (Malaysiakini, 24 August 2026, Free Malaysia Today, 24 August 2026).

25 August 2026 Tuanku Muhriz attends the state-level Maulidur Rasul celebration in Seremban as Yang di-Pertuan Besar, delivering a titah (royal address) on the supremacy of the Constitution (Berita Harian, 25 August 2026).

28 August 2026 Azrin Khairi was proclaimed the 17th Undang of Jelebu at a pemasyhuran (proclamation ceremony) at the Telapak Anak Waris Perut Ulu Jelebu, Kuala Klawang. The proclamation, made by Ismail Mohd Zin as the claimed holder of the customary proclaiming office, was objected to on the spot by a Jelebu Luak customary board delegation disputing that authority (Utusan Malaysia, 29 August 2026, New Straits Times, 29 August 2026).

31 August 2026 Tuanku Muhriz presides over the state-level National Day celebration as Yang di-Pertuan Besar, received on arrival by Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim (Bernama, 31 August 2026).

5 September 2026 The Undang camp issues a media statement claiming that Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim signed a proclamation under Article 10(2) on 3 August 2026, completing the removal of Tuanku Muhriz it says began on 19 April 2026, and directing the State Secretary and state administration to comply immediately. The signed proclamation is not published (Malaysiakini, 6 September 2026).

6 September 2026 Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim responds, describing the Undang statement as the signatories’ right and pledging the loyalty of himself and the State Government to Tuanku Muhriz as Yang di-Pertuan Besar (Malay Mail, 6 September 2026).

7 September 2026 The Court of Appeal heard full arguments on the stay application and reserved its decision, extending the ad interim stay. Case management fixed for 14 September to set the date for delivering the decision (Malay Mail, 7 September 2026, The Star, 7 September 2026).

8 September 2026 The Straits Times reported, citing legal and government sources, that Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim claims he signed the Article 10(2) proclamation under duress, and that he filed a police report on 8 September stating he had been coerced into signing and prevented from leaving the 3 August meeting until he did so. The newspaper also reported that senior UMNO figures were present at that meeting, and that the party figures it named had not responded to requests for comment (The Straits Times, 8 September 2026).

8 September 2026 The Menteri Besar issued a second media statement denying the involvement of UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in any effort to remove Tuanku Muhriz and affirming his support for the party leadership. The statement did not address whether he had signed the 3 August proclamation, nor The Straits Times’ report that he said he signed under duress (Menteri Besar’s media statement, 8 September 2026).

8 September 2026 Late on 8 September, the “Undang” camp held a press conference, fronted by three of the signatories, Maarof Mat Rashad, Muhammed Abdullah and Abdul Rahim Yasin, whose standing as Undang the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) disputes in two of the three cases. They produced a letter they claim was signed by the Menteri Besar confirming the proclamation to remove Tuanku Muhriz, and Maarof said all procedures had been fulfilled (The Vibes, 9 September 2026).

9 September 2026, Tue–Wed: Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim issued a media statement stating that the Proclamation Instrument circulated on the night of 8 September 2026 was signed under duress and without free will. He said a police report was lodged around 6pm on 8 September, and that the State Executive Council, sitting the same day, discussed forming a Reconciliation Committee to address the adat issue. The State Government maintains the Instrument fails to meet the process required under Article 10 of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution 1959 and is therefore invalid. The statement also invoked Article 71 of the Federal Constitution and reaffirmed the MB's loyalty to Tuanku Muhriz as the lawful Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

14 September 2026: The Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) reaffirmed its 31 July resolution that the 19 April proclamation is invalid, three of its four signatories having held no office of Undang on that date. It found that no enquiry under Article 10(1) of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution 1959 was ever carried out, that the proclamation lapsed when the then Menteri Besar declined to sign it on 20 April, and that Tuanku Muhriz remains Yang di-Pertuan Besar. The Dewan named the three serving Undangs, declared Jelebu and Dato' Shahbandar Sungei Ujong vacant, characterised the six signatures on the 5 September document as derhaka (treason) under Adat and law, and directed its Setiausaha (Secretary) to lodge a police report. It also declined the State Government's proposed Jawatankuasa Pendamai (Reconciliation Committee) on Article 16 grounds (Berita Harian, 14 September 2026, Malay Mail, 14 September 2026).
